May we introduce you to one of our smallest assistants: the strain gauges. They are put on relevant points of the test object to measure the strain on it. As the object is deformed by a load, the metallic foil is deformed as well, causing its electrical resistance to change.
As strain gauges are indispensable at IMA Dresden, we give you three facts about them:
– Our smallest type of strain gauges measures only about 1,65×1,65 mm.
– For the full-scale test on the Airbus A380-800 we installed 5,000 strain gauges.
– During the last measurement runs with a tram that we carried out, a single strain gauge gathered 115.200.000 measured values in total. 451,200 values were recorded per second and 21,657,600,000 readings were recorded across all measuring points during the whole test run.
