Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Ridzewski Business is responsible for the area of fibre-reinforced plastics as Development Manager and Senior Principal Engineer. With this expertise, he was once again able to convince at the board elections in two of the largest composites associations in Germany. The AVK - Industrievereinigung Verstärkte Kunststoffe e. V./Federation of Reinforced Plastics confirmed Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ridzewski in his position as board member and chairman of the board, as did the Composites United Bau network. The two strong organisations have also officially come together in the umbrella association Composites Germany: This represents the capabilities and interests of the German fibre composite industry. We congratulate Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ridzewski [...]

Eight students headed for Dresden Airport today. But not to fly off on holiday, but to take a look behind the scenes. Together with a teacher, the 13th grade students from the mechanical engineering advanced course at the Berufliches Schulzentrum Meißen-Radebeul deepened their knowledge in the area of "Innovative materials and selected materials testing methods". The testing experts provided insights into the testing methods used at Applus+ IMA Dresden, the materials to be tested and compared plastic, metal and fibre-reinforced plastic. We were very pleased with the interest and hope to see some of the talent again in a few years. [...]

After only nine short months we were able to send it on its way to China: The servohydraulic strength testing module – to be used mostly for dynamic fatigue tests on implants – is the next milestone on our way to establish a new testing lab in Shanghai.  Congratulations to the whole team for this exceptional performance! The testing machine unit consists of 6 pieces of 1-axis strength testing machines with a common control and regulation unit. Each testing machine can be controlled independently in two control modes (force and displacement). The application spectrum is mainly in dynamic fatigue tests on implants. In addition the user software has also been further refined: In cooperation with the Applus+ development team and the programmer [...]

What happens when soil presses on a tank underground? Does the material deform, do perhaps cracks appear? Are the connections still in the right place? That’s what our tank and container experts at Applus+ IMA Dresden examine in relevant tests. Specifically, the team can carry out static internal pressure tests, negative pressure tests, deformation measurements and wall thickness determinations. However, not only approval-tests for DIBt, but also the monitoring of unpressurised tanks is part of the daily routine for the testers. Applus+ IMA Dresden does not limit itself to the tests in its own halls – the colleagues also take a close look at the manufacturer of the containers and are responsible for the external monitoring according to state [...]

Although production technologies and manufacturing routines are constantly refined, cases of damage are still occurring as a result of product defects, installation errors or incorrect operation. This is where Applus+ IMA Dresden GmbH comes into play: By means of a rigorous systematic approach, our materials engineers examine damages in machinery, systems, plants and components. Different kinds of are at our disposal: materialography, thermal analysis and non-destructive testing. We determine the cause of product failure and also act as expert assessors. And while we are at it, we may marvel at the work of art emerging under the microscope.   Find more information on damage analysis here: https://www.ima-dresden.de/en/service-portfolio [...]

Great teamwork, interesting experiments and forward-thinking technology: This perfectly describes our project “QuantCarbon” which was completed in June. In cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institut für Keramische Technologien und Systeme IKTS, Rotortechnik GmbH & Co. KG and Leichtbau Zentrum Sachsen GmbH we tested the structural integrity of carbon fiber-reinforced composites by means of Acoustic Emission Testing. Until now, other testing procedures were used to diagnose internal damages of carbon fiber-reinforced composites – for instance X-ray or the pulse-echo-method using ultrasound. The biggest advantage of the innovative Acoustic Emission Testing, compared to previous testing procedures, is that larger components can now be monitored [...]
